Whether a relationship started online or in another way, it is important to watch for signs that the relationship is having issues. The following could indicate that a relationship is not working out.
The Ex
In a relationship which involves children, the ex almost always has to be in the picture to some degree and this is acceptable. If your relationship partner does not have kids, but still spends time with his or her ex, there could be a problem. It would be wise to try to find out why your partner wants to spend time with that other person, and if there is a need that person is fulfilling.
Lying
Relationships are built upon trust. If you find out your partner has been lying to you about anything, even if it is something seemingly unimportant, it could be a warning of a more serious issue. First, what is the lying meant to cover up? It could be a white lie to protect your feelings, but what are you being protected from? And if he or she is going to lie to you about that, what else has he or she lied about in the past, and what could be lied about in the future? Honesty is of the utmost importance in a relationship.
Checking Others Out
It is not very reasonable to assume that you are the only person your partner finds attractive, nor is it reasonable for him or her to expect that of you. If your partner is checking out an extreme amount of other men or women, there may be a problem, and that problem is with them, not you. It is not in good taste to flirt with others, even if you do find them attractive, while in a relationship.
The Friends
Who a person chooses to hang around with often gives a good indication of what that person values. If all of your partners friends are people whom you dislike and can’t understand why your partner likes, it may be time to rethink your choice in partners since he or she is probably either like them, or wants to be like them. Having a few friends that you dislike is not cause for alarm, but if you are unable to tolerate any of them, there is likely a problem and these friends will not just go away over time.
Lives
Even in a relationship, partners must have their own lives. If one person’s life is based around being with the other person constantly, waiting by the phone for a call or the internet for a message, or something similar, they probably don’t have much else going on in their lives. It is important to find a person with similar ambitions to you. If you are a driven person, it is unlikely that you would be content with someone who is happy to loaf around all day.
