Online Dating Sites

In the 21st century, it is much more common for couples to meet online. Since online dating first gained prominence in 1990′s, the most popular online dating sites worked on a simple model. Participants pay a subscription fee in order to create a profile and contact other users. There was a bit of a stigma attached to online dating at its inception. However, now that over one third of all married couples met via an online service, it has become a recognized and viable way to meet a significant other. In fact, many people swear to the fact that meeting people online is more effective than meeting people in bars or other popular pickup spots as you can learn more about the person before even making contact with them.

Around the year 2000, the landscape of online dating websites began to shift toward a cost free model. Usually supported by advertising on the site, these sites were able to generate many more users, including people who are more casually interested and would not have paid to use other online dating sites. As a result, the user totals of these sites have skyrocketed and free dating sites have overtaken paid dating sites in popularity.

Using a free dating site as opposed to a paid online dating site does have its share of drawbacks however. Allowing anyone to make a profile and contact others without the barrier of entering a credit card and being charged resulted in more overall users, but some argue that it leads to a diluted experience as users now must sift through large quantities of members to find someone that they want to talk to.

The biggest problem in these free sites is that someone could create a joke profile or worse, use their profile as a means to scam. There has been criticism that more people use deceptive pictures and lie in their profile on free sites. While this could not be confirmed or denied, it does stand to reason that someone who is paid for a site membership may be likely to take it more seriously than someone who has not.

Unfortunately, this may lead to the downfall of the free online dating site. While there are certainly some success stories and real people to meet for people willing to invest the time to find each other. The unwanted guests joining the free online dating site party may be lowering the user experience on the free websites to the point where users would rather join a paid service or abandon online dating sites altogether.

Also, the quality of service provided by a free site is often not comparable to the paid site. As far as technical support and profile and contact options are concerned, a paid site will almost always offer more options and a more engaging user experience. Of course, better technology does not always mean a better experience. Free sites are often the destination of choice of people who are after a wide range of selection of people today.

When deciding between a free and paid online dating site, first consider your needs. If you are looking for a smaller but more active dating pool, then a paid site is probably what you’re looking for. However, if you don’t mind sorting through some scams and fake profiles, a free site will provide you with more options.
