Online dating sites can make it easier to find somebody, but that doesn’t mean they do all of the work for you. If you want your love life to work, you still need to approach internet dating with a successful mindset. If you want to build long lasting, successful relationships, you need to avoid some of the following mistakes. Mess up, and you could ruin your chances of even building long lasting friendships.
- Misrepresentation – This is one of the most common mistakes that people make when they first try online dating. Don’t think that just because you haven’t lied about your weight or your career that you aren’t misrepresenting who you are. There is some truth to the idea that we all stretch the truth when we are first dating, but there is a limit to how far you can push this tendency. Small lies about who you are can start to build up over time.
This isn’t just about misleading your partner, it is also about misleading yourself. Don’t waste time pretending to care about things you have no interest in. Don’t lie about knowing things you don’t know anything about. Even if the truths behind these lies never come out, you will be straining yourself on a daily basis trying to pretend to be something that you are not. The more you stretch the truth, the harder things will get for you, and the relationship will be seriously tested at some point in the future.
- Giving Too Much Away – On the opposite side of the spectrum, you can get yourself into trouble by giving away too much information about yourself too early on in the online dating process. There are two reasons that this can be a mistake. For starters, giving away your life story before you have even met in person indicates that you are desperate. It makes you sound as though you will settle for almost anybody you meet, and therefore you are probably emotionally unstable or needy. People want their space, especially when they are first meeting somebody.
By the same token, giving away too much information online can put you at risk. It is best not to let somebody know exactly where you live or give away personal information without first meeting somebody in person. They could be some kind of creep, or even an identity thief. It is much easier to judge somebody’s motives after meeting them in person.
- Waiting Too Long to Meet – It is a mistake to get too attached to somebody before actually meeting them in person. Chemistry that you might think you have could turn out not to exist once the two of you meet in person. Not only that, but the more you talk about online, the less you will have to talk about on your first date. Internet dating sites are for meeting people, not for building relationships.
